You can use whatever octane you want assuming that you don't mind the performance difference, and that your engine ECU (Engine Control Unit) can retard the timing to avoid detonation. If you use a lower octane and experience detonation (knock) you will need to go back to the higher octane. If older engines experience compression loss they are more likely to detonate on lower octane fuels.
