I've heard they will and that it'll be like the ipod so presumably it'll be a phone that's based on the aesthetics of the ipod and with similar functionality

It is almost certain now that YES there will be one as early as or before Q2 07. Apple's iPhone patent was recently granted and u can take a look @ the actual patent drawing and a mock-up rendering here:
